Evolving Joomla: Automated Redirects in Joomla - How a Sprint Idea Became a Plugin

"Hello Rachel… I think we have a problem… Google is listing the wrong pages."
Sadly I’d heard it before.
And sure enough, when I took a look at the site I was right. The client had been busy renaming blog articles, changing menu items all for better SEO rankings. The idea was right, but nobody had told Google.

Updating a Rather Complex Site To Joomla 5.0.0

For the July 2023 issue I had written a Joomla Magazine article about my first experiences with Joomla 5.0alpha1. I started with an empty installation and tried out some features: Creating articles, installing and using extensions. Now we are in October 2023. The final release of Joomla 5.0.0 is out since October 17, 2023, as well as the “bridge release” Joomla 4.4.0. One day later, I had all my sites on J4.4.0 without significant difficulties.

My next goal was a reality check for Joomla 5.0.0!

Off to Cyprus, ehm, Cypress - How Joomla does its end-to-end testing

Once, there was a time when testers had to manually test everything in Joomla, clicking through all the views and features each and every time a change was made. It was exhausting, cumbersome and prone to errors.

Along came Selenium! A tool to automatically control browsers, defining long click paths through all of Joomla, repeatable, reliable, not exhausting and requiring less people-power. And the testers saw all the tests that they made, and it was very good.

Joomla!

Why choose Joomla for your e-Commerce website

While Content Management Systems (CMS) reduce the burdens associated with building a website, particularly an e-Commerce one, choosing the right system is a pretty hard decision by itself. The three biggest CMSs every eCommerce entrepreneur has to consider are a pretty popular in the CMS world and eCommerce entrepreneurs usually end up choosing one of them for their website. Joomla takes the cake because of its extensive functionality, ease of use, extendability and its ability to deliver a wholesome online business experience.

Too many extensions equals panic!

Joomla! is an incredibly powerful system out-of-the-box. Naturally, it can be extended through extensions (plugins, components, modules, templates, languages) to increase its functionality and make the site adapt to your needs. That brings us to one of the most common made mistakes in Joomla! site administration: installing too many extensions. Sure, that one might be handy, and hey - why not add that one too? It's common practice not to install too many extensions, and generally teached. However, from personal experience, this isn't followed too often....

Improved Multi-lingual Content Management

No one likes to do repetitive tasks when there is a solution to reduce them. I was selected this year on Google Summer of Code to make the life of multi-lingual platform admins easier. The challenge is to change the way Joomla! deals with several components in a multi-lingual platform. It can be performed in a single page in a side-by-side way, instead of being limited to the “new”-”save and close” loop for items referring to the same thing.
